Building a strong resume and online presence via LinkedIn are both imperative in this new digital age. With the always connected world trickling into the business realm, it’s highly likely that your next interview opportunity will come your way via a social media outlet like LinkedIn or a colleague. The possibility to interview for an exciting new role means that your resume or business resume/profile has done its job.
However, once the excitement of finding out the recruiter wants to talk with you rubs off, the anxiety and anticipation of the actual interview sets in. What if I can’t answer the interview questions? What if I’m not really qualified? What if, what if, what if!!!! Well, what if you could walk into that room (interview conference room or show up on the Zoom screen) with the confidence and swagger of Muhammad Ali in his prime? Or, what if you knew the answers to the interview questions, before you ever heard the interview questions? Would those two things ease the stress a bit? Would they help you relax? Would they give YOU the advantage above all the other candidates being interview for YOUR position? Would they help you CRUSH your interview? Of course they would! But is this even possible? Well…YEAH! I wouldn’t have highlighted those two if they weren’t.
Here’s how:
If you would like to learn the full gamut of strategies to absolutely CRUSH your interview, like how to structure your answers for maximum effectiveness or how to ensure your answers stand out from your competitors, lets chat! of this job. I will balance confidence and humility as I impress and become a must hire for the interviewer. This job is mine, I deserve it and I will go get it!” The next step is the most important. While saying this affirmation, you must stick out your chest and assume the Wonder Woman or Superman pose! Chin up, chest out, fists on your sides…the whole deal! I know, I know…it sounds a little silly, but trust me it works! And…there is no downside, so what do you have to lose. So now you want the answers to the test, right? Well assuming you will have a behavioral based interview, which is the new standard and preferred interview process of most companies, they will be asking you questions that start with, ”Tell me about a time when…”. For the interviewer, it’s all about hearing how you have behaved, led, performed, and executed in the past. The premise is that your past behavior will most likely predict your future behavior, and subsequently your performance in your new role. The good news is you have the power in this type of interview. Simply create a list of 10-15 scenarios. These scenarios will become your interview answers. The list of scenarios should include the following:
· Situations in which you were a top performer.
· Situations where you led a team to a victory at work or elsewhere.
· Situations that you are most proud of.
· Pivotal moments in your life or career.
· Failures that shaped a new positive way of thinking for you or provided a key learning.
· High scope projects you have worked on.
· Times you have been recognized for a job well done.
Once you create your list, you have the answers to the interview questions. When you are asked a question now you can pull solely from your list of scenarios. The anxiety associated with trying to recall all the memories and scenarios over the course of your career to identify the perfect answer for the question is negated! Just mentally peruse your scenario list, select the scenario that best fits the interviewer’s question, and Wala!
